Destination Weddings in India: What It Really Costs and Who It Suits

A destination wedding is not automatically more expensive. Below roughly 150 guests it is frequently cheaper than a comparable-quality city wedding, because you trade guest volume for per-guest experience. Above 300 guests, the logistics cost curve turns sharply against you.

The guest-count break-even

The maths is simple: in a city wedding your marginal guest costs one plate. In a destination wedding your marginal guest costs a plate, a room-night or three, and a share of transfers. That marginal cost is typically 4–6x higher, which is why destination weddings work best when you genuinely want a smaller wedding.

Udaipur, Goa and Jaipur compared

• Udaipur: highest venue cost, strongest visual payoff, peak Oct–Mar. Palace properties from ₹12 lakh for two days.
• Goa: best value on rooms, beach and resort options, monsoon closure Jun–Sep. Full weddings viable from ₹18 lakh for 120 guests.
• Jaipur: strong middle ground, excellent vendor supply, easier road access from Delhi NCR. Heritage venues from ₹8 lakh.

What families underestimate

Guest travel subsidy, which most Indian families end up partially absorbing. Vendor travel and stay, which is billed on top of the quote and can add 15–20%. And the drop-off rate — expect 20–30% of invited guests to decline a destination wedding, which is fine if you planned for it and painful if you did not.

When to hire a planner

Always, for destination. This is the one scenario where a planner reliably pays for themselves — local vendor sourcing, permissions, room blocks and transfer logistics in an unfamiliar market are extremely difficult to run remotely.
