What an Indian Wedding Actually Costs in 2026: A Line-by-Line Breakdown

The average urban Indian wedding for 400 guests now costs between ₹25 and ₹45 lakh, and almost every family we speak to arrives at that number by accident rather than design. The problem is rarely overspending on one thing. It is a hundred small decisions made without a running total.

Where the money actually goes

For a 400-guest wedding, catering and venue together account for roughly 55–60% of the total. Decor takes another 12–15%. Photography, makeup, entertainment, outfits and jewellery split the remainder. If you want to move your total meaningfully, you have to move one of the first two — trimming the mehndi artist will not do it.

  • Venue and catering: ₹14–26 lakh (55–60%)
  • Decor and flowers: ₹3–6 lakh (12–15%)
  • Photography and film: ₹1.5–3 lakh (6–8%)
  • Outfits and jewellery: ₹3–8 lakh (highly variable)
  • Entertainment, makeup, mehndi: ₹1–2.5 lakh (4–6%)
  • Invitations, gifts, logistics: ₹1–2 lakh (4–5%)

The four costs families consistently underestimate

First, the minimum guarantee at your venue — you pay for plates, not guests, and a 500-plate minimum against 400 actual attendees is ₹5 lakh of food nobody eats. Second, outstation guest accommodation, which families often absorb without budgeting. Third, decor overtime and venue overstay penalties. Fourth, the "small" additions in the last fortnight, which in our experience add 8–12% to the final bill.

What to protect when you cut

Photography, food quality, guest comfort and the makeup artist. These four are what guests remember and what you look back on. Almost everything else — the imported flowers, the third live counter, the extended decor to the parking area — is invisible within a week.
